Promoting your website on a low budget

Submitted By Staff On 2nd Jan 2008 - 3:53pm :: Report Tutorial :: Go Back to Tutorial Listings

The promoting of a website on a low budget was once considered esoteric knowledge. With companies also paying thousands upon thousands of dollars for all singing-all dancing websites; insisting on ASP over open-source, and resultantly, free programming languages such as PHP and JSP, people were naturally under the erroneous impression that for web-development, and thus promotion, you required hard cash ? and lots of it. Thanks to the influx of Internet-related forums, such as Digital Point, NamePros and Sitepoint, the once harboured information is now widely accessible by every man and his dog. These days, spending a few hundred dollars can be as effective as spending a thousand, so as long as your truly understand your target audience.

An abundance of websites on the Internet these days do well from social bookmarking websites. You may well have heard of the Digg effect, and because of the amount of traffic over a couple of days that Digg can bring you, many web-servers cannot handle the bountiful traffic and collapse under the weight. There are however much-welcomed reverberations from landing your website on the front-page of Digg and that is the abundance of back-links that it can give you. Many people have also spoke favourably about StumbleUpon, because it works differently to Digg, StumbleUpon can often give you many hundreds of unique visitors a day, continuing on indefinitely.

Back-links are an important player in the promotion of your website. These can be attained in a lot of ways, such as the aforementioned social bookmarking sites. Other types of websites that you may consider attaining back-links from are weblogs, website directories and social networking websites. These all allow you to place your website URL which Google, Yahoo and other various search engines will crawl and take note of. However, before you go blissfully submitting your links all over the place, there is one barrier that may stand in the way, preventing Google from actually counting it as a valid back-link, and that is the no follow attribute. The no follow attribute essentially informs Google, and any other search engines, that the website the link is on does not endorse the target website of the link. Luckily, most websites these days still do not take advantage of the no follow, this does not mean, however, that you casually ignore it based on probability. After all, why waste 2 minute?s of your time if it?s not going to be considered a valid back-link?

In addition to the above ways of attaining back-links, purchasing links from other webmasters is a great way to get you some juicy back-links. Querying the Alexa database for each website you find that is topically related to yours. Take note of the Alexa rank, ideally you are after websites that are round about what your Alexa rank is. If the target website?s Alexa rank is too high then it?s doubtful the webmaster would agree to such an affiliation, and vice versa if it?s too low ? in the sense that it really wouldn?t bring much link juice to your website. The page rank is also another factor to consider, with page ranks of roundabout the same as yours. Link affiliation is essentially link swapping, that is, I?ll put your link on my website if you put my website on yours. Google and Yahoo give less link juice to links if they?re reciprocated, but that doesn?t mean it?s fruitless, but rather if you can afford to purchase a link, consider doing so as it?ll be much more worthwhile.

Many websites these days are started from low budgets and work their way up the Internet?s success ladder. The key to the success of any website is not only a good idea, but having the knowledge to get it seen by the multitude. Failure to execute the latter part of the plan correctly will mean your website keeps its feet firmly on the ground ? and that?s not where you want it to be. Conversely, when done right, your website, regardless of the website?s overall budget, will see much success in the months and years to come.
